PwC Australia has hired senior Westpac lawyer Kylie Gray as its permanent general counsel as the firm remakes its leadership team and governance structure following its tax leaks scandal.

Ms Gray will succeed Gilbert + Tobin partner Karen Evans-Cullen, who has been acting in the role since mid-July. Ms Evans-Cullen was appointed to the temporary role after the retirement of PwC’s long-time general counsel Meredith Beattie was announced in early July.

Ms Gray has worked in Westpac’s legal team for more than 13 years and has been the bank’s general counsel for litigation, regulatory investigations and financial crime for the past 3½ years. The former King & Wood Mallesons lawyer has also been Westpac’s general counsel for institutional and regulatory issues as well as holding other leadership positions at the bank.

“Opportunities like this do not often arise, and I look forward to leading this crucial business unit,” Ms Gray said in a statement. “Considerable change has already occurred at the firm, but there is more to do, and I am excited to be a part of this new chapter.”
