Gary Locke, a former U.S. ambassador to China from 2011 to 2014, has joined law firm Dorsey & Whitney as a senior advisor, the firm said on Thursday.
Locke, based in Seattle, was the Democratic governor of Washington state from 1997 to 2005 and served as U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2011.
Locke said in an interview that Dorsey has a strong U.S.-China practice that advises U.S. companies doing business in China and Chinese companies that want to invest in the United States.
Locke was the first American of Chinese descent to head the U.S. embassy in Beijing. His term was marked by a dramatic diplomatic row over the fate of human rights activist Chen Guangcheng.
He most recently was the interim president of Bellevue College in Washington state. He currently chairs the Committee of 100, a non-profit for Chinese Americans on civic engagement, policy, arts, culture and philanthropy, the firm said.
Dorsey has advised Chinese companies including specialty pharmaceutical company Eddingpharm in a 2019 deal in which it acquired Eli Lilly’s rights in China to two antibiotics products and a manufacturing facility for $375 million. The firm also lists on its website prior client engagements with Chinese companies including Fulum Group and By-Health.
