Based in London, João is the Chief Privacy Officer of BeiGene. BeiGene is a global biopharmaceutical company with over 9,000 employees listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the Shanghai STAR Market and NASDAQ. His work at BeiGene was crucial for being recognized as 2022 Privacy Executive of the Year by the PICCASO Privacy Awards.  

His experience in the Life Sciences Industry also includes privacy roles at Celgene and the European Medicines Agency. He has also served other industries, such as the digital tech industry, as the global Chief Privacy Officer of HCL Technologies, an IT services company with 225.000 employees, and the finance sector, as the global Chief Privacy Officer of Willis Towers Watson, the third largest global insurance intermediary. 

João serves as a board member of different associations, including the Research Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the International Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Privacy Consortium, and the Digital Trade Policy Taskforce of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization. 

João is also a member of the UK’s International Data Transfers Expert Council, a group of 20 individuals who inform the UK government on the country cross-border data protection strategy post-Brexit. He is a co-author of several privacy books, including the Privacy Program Management book used as the main training material for all the IAPP CIPP/M certifications.
